Hillel Solotaroff

Doctor and anarchist (1865–1921)

Hillel Solotaroff was a medical doctor and prominent figure in the anarchist movement, particularly within the Jewish and Yiddish-speaking communities in New York. Born in 1865, he emigrated from Elizabetgrad to the United States in 1882, marking the beginning of his involvement in activism. During his time in medical school, Solotaroff balanced his studies with contributions to various anarchist publications and delivered public lectures, showcasing his dedication to the cause.

As a member of the Jewish anarchist group Pioneers of Liberty, Solotaroff played a significant role in introducing key figures in the movement, including Emma Goldman and Alexander Berkman. His writings appeared in numerous publications throughout his life, with a notable daily column in the Yiddish-language newspaper Der Tog. Solotaroff's commitment to anarchism and his work as a doctor continued until his death in 1921, leaving a lasting impact on the Jewish and Yiddish-speaking anarchist communities in New York.
