Hélène Sosnowska

Polish-French gynaecologist (1864–1942)

Hélène Sosnowska was a Polish-French gynaecologist and medical writer who made significant contributions to her field. Born in 1864 in Warsaw to a Jewish family, she later relocated to Paris to pursue her education. Sosnowska studied at the University of Paris Faculty of Medicine, where she defended a thesis on hysteria in children in 1888 under the supervision of renowned physician Jean-Martin Charcot. This achievement marked one of the early medical doctorates awarded to women at the faculty.

As a practicing gynaecologist in Paris, Sosnowska established a reputation for her expertise and wrote extensively on various topics related to her field. Her writings covered the Thure-Brandt method, uterine disease, and clinical techniques, demonstrating her commitment to advancing medical knowledge. Additionally, she explored alternative approaches to health, including vegetarianism and fasting. Through her work, Sosnowska left a lasting impact on the medical community, and her legacy continues to be recognized until her death in 1942.
