Yisroel Hopstein
Hasidic leader of Poland (1737–1814)
Yisroel Hopstein, known as the Maggid of Kozhnitz, was a prominent figure in the Hasidic movement in Poland. Born in 1737, he went on to become a respected leader and founder of the Kozhnitz Hasidic dynasty. His teachings and writings had a profound impact on the movement, shaping its development during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
As a student of notable rabbis, including the Magid of Mezeritch and Elimelech of Lizhensk, Hopstein's knowledge and influence were deeply rooted in the traditions of Hasidism and Kabbalah. He authored numerous books on these subjects, contributing significantly to the body of Chassidus and Kabbalistic literature. Hopstein passed away in 1814, leaving behind a legacy as a towering figure in the Hasidic movement and a renowned Kabbalist.
