New York divorce coercion gang
Kidnap and torture ring
The New York divorce coercion gang was a group of Haredi Jewish individuals who engaged in illicit activities, including kidnapping and torture, to coerce Jewish men into granting their wives religious divorces. Operating in the New York metropolitan area, the group's actions were rooted in their interpretation of Jewish law and the desire to enforce the granting of gittin, or religious divorces. Their methods, however, were in stark contrast to the principles of their faith, as they resorted to violent and intimidating tactics to achieve their goals.
The group's activities ultimately came to an end in October 2013, when the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) conducted a sting operation that led to the prosecution of four individuals. The subsequent trial resulted in the conviction of three men in late 2015, bringing a measure of justice to the victims of the gang's coercive actions. The case highlighted the darker aspects of extremist ideologies and the importance of upholding the law in protecting the rights and safety of individuals, regardless of their religious affiliations.
