Nathan Navro

Russian-American anarchist (1876–1947)

Nathan Navro was a Russian-American anarchist who made significant contributions to literature. Born in 1876, Navro immigrated to the United States in the 1890s and settled in Philadelphia, where he began to learn the English language. Under the guidance of Voltairine de Cleyre, a prominent figure in his life, Navro became proficient in English and started writing poems that were published in Free Society.

Navro's relationship with de Cleyre extended beyond a teacher-student dynamic, as he later became her primary caregiver, nursing her through a prolonged period of ill health. The two formed a close bond that lasted until de Cleyre's death. Navro's experiences with de Cleyre inspired him to write a manuscript about her life, which has since become a vital primary source for those seeking to understand her. Navro passed away in 1947, leaving behind a legacy as a musician, writer, and devoted caregiver.
