Fritz London
Duits natuurkundige (1900-1954)
Fritz London was a renowned physicist born in Germany in 1900. He later became a professor at Duke University, where he made significant contributions to the field of physics. Although often associated with astronomy, his work primarily focused on the underlying principles of chemical bonding and intermolecular forces. These contributions have become fundamental to the field of physical chemistry and continue to be referenced in standard textbooks.
London's work extended beyond chemical bonding, as he collaborated with his brother Heinz to advance the understanding of superconductors. Together, they developed the London equations, which describe the electromagnetic properties of superconductors. This work, along with his contributions to chemical bonding, earned London numerous recognitions, including five nominations for the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. He passed away in 1954, leaving behind a legacy of classic contributions to the field of physics.
