Eliezer Zusia Portugal was a prominent American rabbi of Bessarabian origin, born in 1898. He is best known for being the first Rebbe of Skulen, a position that earned him reverence from his followers across various countries, including Russia, Romania, Israel, and the United States. His exceptional personal qualities, particularly his warmth and compassion, made him a beloved figure among his community.
Throughout his life, Rabbi Portugal demonstrated remarkable care for the welfare of Jewish youth and war orphans, taking hundreds under his wing and treating them as his own children. His legacy extended to the establishment of the Skulener dynasty in America during the 1960s. Upon his passing in 1982, he was succeeded by his biological son, Rabbi Yisroel Avrohom Portugal, who took on the role of Rebbe, ensuring the continuation of his father's work and legacy.
