Al-Samawal al-Maghribi

wiskundige uit kalifaat van de Abbasiden (1130-1180)

Al-Samawal al-Maghribi was a 12th-century mathematician, astronomer, and physician who made significant contributions to the field of astronomy. Born into a Jewish family of Moroccan origin, his early life was marked by a complex personal journey. His father, Yehuda ibn Abūn, was a rabbi from Morocco, and Al-Samawal's upbringing was rooted in this tradition.

Al-Samawal's life took a profound turn when he converted to Islam, a decision he initially kept hidden from his family due to fear of offending his father. However, in 1163, he openly embraced Islam after having a dream that compelled him to make this significant change in his life. As a scholar of multiple disciplines, including mathematics, astronomy, and medicine, Al-Samawal al-Maghribi's work reflects the intellectual curiosity and breadth of knowledge that defined his era.
